Freny Gazdar 's story

Finding home again

In 2018, at the age of 78, Freny Gazdar arrived at the Ahura Support Residential Home (ASRH) not just as a resident, but as someone seeking stability in a world that had changed around her. Having spent most of her life at the residential facility of another organisation for the differently abled, she found herself at a crossroads when it shut down. Ahura Support welcomed her and quickly became her familiar home, a place where she could rebuild her sense of belonging.

Unlike many of the younger residents, Freny carried a lifetime of experiences. She was the eldest member of the community and though age had slowed her down physically, her spirit remained resilient right up to her passing in May 2021.

She took pride in participating in activities, enjoyed outings and refused to let her age be a reason to be left behind. Be it a picnic or a social gathering, Freny was eager to engage and be a part of the moment.

Despite being soft-spoken and reserved, she was also assertive and expressive, making her presence felt among her peers and caregivers. She followed instructions, engaged in short conversations and had a quiet yet determined way of getting her point across. Like anyone who has lived a full life, Freny had her moments of frustration and when provoked, could be fiercely vocal — a testament to the strength of her personality.

With advancing age, medical concerns became more frequent, but being on the Masina Hospital premises, we were able to provide Freny the care she needed.

For Freny, the Ahura Support Residential Home was not just a place to stay, it was a promise of security, dignity and care; a place where she was seen, valued, provided compassionate attention and the space to be herself.

A woman who, despite the challenges of time, age and life, refused to fade into the background, Freny’s memory lives on in the hearts of all the lives she touched.
